Curriculum Vitae


Born in 1948. Josef Ackermann studied economics and social sciences at the University of St. Gallen and, subsequently, obtained his Doctorate. He remained affiliated with the University of St. Gallen and taught for many years afterwards at the Economics Department.


In 1977, Josef Ackermann joined Schweizerische Kreditanstalt (SKA), a part of today’s Credit Suisse Group. In 1990, he was appointed to the Executive Board and three years later became President of the SKA. In 1996, he was elected member of the Board of Managing Directors of Deutsche Bank AG, where he was responsible for the investment banking division. Under his stewardship this business unit developed into one of Deutsche Bank AG’s principal revenue sources and entered the top group of global investment banks. In 2002, Josef Ackermann became Spokesman of the Board of Managing Directors and Chairman of the Group Executive Committee. In addition to the latter position, in February 2006, he was named Chairman of the Management Board. Besides his engagements with Deutsche Bank AG, Josef Ackermann is a member of the Supervisory Board of Siemens AG and of the International Advisory Council of Zurich Financial Services Group. In addition, Josef Ackermann is visiting professor in Finance at the London School of Economics and plays an active role in the Initiative Finanzstandort Deutschland as member of the Initiator’s Group.


Josef Ackermann is also Chairman of the Board of the Institute of International Finance and Co-Chairman of the Foundation Board of the World Economic Forum. At the Metropolitan Opera New York he acts as a member of the Board of Advisory Directors. Furthermore, Josef Ackermann is Chairman of the St. Gallen Foundation for International Studies.
