Curriculum Vitae


Born in 1966. Marco Becht holds a Doctorate in economics from the European University Institute in Florence and a Bachelor of Sciences as well as a Master of Sciences from the London School of Economics.


Marco Becht worked at the Centro de Estudios Monetarios y Financieros in Madrid and at the European Commission’s Directorate for Enterprise and Industry. He was an invited member of the Executive Committee of the European Confederation of Director’s Associations, a member of the European Academic Council of Standard & Poor’s and a scientific adviser to the Committee on Corporate Governance of the European Association of Securities Dealers. Currently, Marco Becht is Professor of Finance and Economics at the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB), Executive Director of the European Corporate Governance Institute (ECGI) and a Resident Fellow at the European Centre for Advanced Research in Economics and Statistics (ECARES) at ULB. Marco Becht was Visiting Professor at the Saïd Business School of the University of Oxford in 2003 and named, for the spring term 2008, Max Schmidheiny Visiting Professor for Entrepreneurship and Risk at the University of St. Gallen.


Besides his academic activities, Marco Becht has been involved in consulting projects for the European Commission, major European banks as well as in launching the Transatlantic Corporate Governance Dialogue (TCGD). Moreover, he is the Scientist in Charge of the European Corporate Governance Training Network (ECGTN). Marco Becht has given expert briefings on corporate governance to the Group of Economic Analysis of the President of the European Commission, Alcatel, BP, the OECD and the World Bank, among others. Furthermore, he is a member of the Belgian Corporate Governance Commission.


Marco Becht has published various working papers such as Returns to Shareholder Activism: Evidence from a Clinical Study of the Hermes U.K. Focus Fund and Where Do Firms Incorporate? Deregulation and the Cost of Entry.
