Curriculum Vitae


Born in 1938. Heinz Fischer studied law and political science at the University of Vienna. After having received a Doctorate in Law, he underwent practical training in court. In 1978, he became Associate Professor of Political Science at the University of Innsbruck and received a full Professorship in 1994.


Heinz Fischer acted for the Socialist (Social Democratic) Group in the Austrian Parliament as its Secretary, from 1963 to 1975, and its Executive Chairman, from 1975 to 1983. He was a member of the National Council from 1971 to 2004, a function he interrupted when he took office as Federal Minister of Science and Research between 1983 and 1987. Heinz Fischer was elected President of the National Council in 1990, a position he held for twelve consecutive years until 2002, when he assumed office as Second President of the National Council. Between 1992 and 2004, he additionally acted as Deputy Chairman of the Party of European Socialists. In 2004, Heinz Fischer was elected Federal President of the Republic of Austria.


Apart from being the author of numerous books and smaller publications in the fields of law and political science, Heinz Fischer is also Co-Editor of the Austrian Journal of Political Science, the quarterly Journal of Law Policy and the European Tour d’horizon. He has been member of numerous important bodies such as the National Security Council and the Foreign Affairs Council of the Republic of Austria. From 1995 to 2002, he was President of the National Fund of the Republic of Austria for the Victims of National Socialism.
