Born in 1942. Yasuo Hayashi graduated from the Faculty of Law of the University of Tokyo in 1966. From 1969 to 1971, he studied at Oxford University.
Upon completion of his studies in Japan, he embarked upon his career with the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI), where he resumed his career after his studies in Great Britain. Between 1981 and 1992, he worked for the International Energy Agency (IEA). In 1992, he returned to MITI, where during the following five years he held the positions of Director-General at the Petroleum Department of the Agency for Natural Resources and Energy, Director-General for International Affairs of the Agency for Natural Resources and Energy, Director-General of the Basic Industry Bureau, Director-General of the International Trade Policy Bureau and, finally, Director-General of the Small and Medium Enterprise Agency. From 1998 to 2000, Yasuo Hayashi served as Senior Executive Director of the Overseas Economic Cooperation Fund, which later became the Japan Bank for International Cooperation, before joining Mitsui & Co., Ltd. as Executive Managing Director in 2000. Four years later, he was promoted to Executive Vice President of Mitsui & Co., Ltd. and Managing Director of Mitsui & Co. Europe plc. In 2006, he raised to pursue further challenges as Counsellor of Mitsui & Co., Ltd. A year later, Yasuo Hayashi assumed his current position as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO).
In addition to his professional career, Yasuo Hayashi was, in 1999, visiting professor at the Graduate School of Economic Science of Saitama University and lectured on the theory of international financial institutions.
