Curriculum Vitae


Born in 1943. Frédéric Jenny graduated from ESSEC Business School in Paris with a Master of Business Administration. In 1975, he received a Doctorate in economics from Harvard University and, in 1977, a Doctorate in economics from the University of Paris II.


Frédéric Jenny joined the faculty of ESSEC Business School in Paris in 1972. He teaches microeconomic theory, industrial organisation and business strategy. Since 2005, he is also a visiting professor at the University College London Faculty of Law. During the course of his career, he has been a visiting professor at Northwestern University, Wuhan University in China, Keio University in Japan as well as Capetown University in South Africa. In 1977, Frédéric Jenny served as an assistant to the French Minister for Consumer Affairs, where he was in charge of drafting and gathering support for the 1977 Competition Bill which introduced merger control in France. He joined the staff of the newly created Commission de la concurrence as a case handler in 1979 and became General Counsel of the Commission de la concurrence in 1984. When the new competition authority Conseil de la concurrence was created in 1986, Frédéric Jenny became its General Counsel. He remained in that position until 1993, when he became Vice Chairman of the Conseil de la concurrence, a position he held until 2004. That year, he assumed the position as a judge on the French Supreme Court, being the only judge with an economic background.


Frédéric Jenny was elected Chairman of the OECD Competition Committee in 1994, a position he still holds today. From April 1997 to December 2003, he also served as Chairman of the WTO Working Group on Trade and Competition in Geneva. He served as an advisor to a number of competition agencies in developing countries. Since April 2007, he has also been a non-executive director of the Office of Fair Trading.


He has published widely on industrial organisation, competition law and policy, international trade and economic development.
