Curriculum Vitae
Born in 1935. Russel Jones completed his studies at the Carnegie Institute of Technology, earning degrees in civil engineering and materials science. After having worked as a practicing civil engineer, he completed his Doctorate at the same institute in 1963.
In the following, he taught in the faculty of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for eight years. He then served for several years in a succession of administrative posts in higher education such as Dean of Engineering at the University of Massachussetts, Academic Vice President at Boston University and President and University Research Professor at the University of Delaware. Prior to forming World Expertise L.L.C. as managing partner, he held the position of Executive Director of the National Society of Professional Engineers. Moreover, he acted as President of the Committee on Engineering Education of the Pan American Association of Engineering Societies. Russel Jones is currently serving as the founding President of the Masdar Institute of Science and Technology, a new university dedicated to graduate education and research, focused on alternative energy. In cooperation with the Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (ADFEC), the Masdar Institute of Technology is presently involved in the Masdar initiative, which has the purpose of building up a city with zero carbon emission and zero waste. With the achievement of the Masdar initiative, Abu Dhabi wants to position itself as a world-class research and development hub for new energy technologies.
Additionally, Russel Jones is President of the World Federation of Engineering Organisations (WFEO) Committee on Capacity Building, member of the United States National Commission on UNESCO and Editor of the International Engineering Education Digest.
He has received numerous awards such as the Collingwood Prize and the Friedmann Professional Recognition Award of the American Society of Civil Engineers. Furthermore, he was elected to honorary member status in the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) in 2004.
