Curriculum Vitae
Born in 1936. Kiyoshi Kurokawa holds a Medical Doctor degree from the University of Tokyo, specialising in internal medicine and nephrology.
After serving as professor of medicine at the University of California in Los Angeles, he was professor and Chairman of the Department of Medicine (I) of the University of Tokyo. Kiyoshi Kurokawa also served as Dean of Tokai University’s School of Medicine and as Director of the Institute of Medical Sciences at Tokai University. In 1997, he became professor emeritus of the University of Tokyo. Since 2006, Kiyoshi Kurokawa has been professor at the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies.
He has held various positions, including Chairman of the Board and President of the Japanese Society of Internal Medicine, President of the International Society of Nephrology and the Japanese Society of Nephrology. He was also the President of the Science Council of Japan, the Pacific Science Association and the Science Council of Asia as well as executive member of the InterAcademy Panel and the InterAcademy Council. In the year 2005 and 2006, he launched, together with other leaders of G8 academies, the presentation for a call for action on global climate change and Africa to the heads of the G8 states. He is the Founding Chairman of the Health Policy Institute Japan, an independent think tank promoting healthcare reform.
Kiyoshi Kurokawa acts as Commissioner of the World Health Organisation’s Commission for Social Determinants of Health. In addition, he serves on many government committees in Japan and has been Science Advisor to the Prime Minister of Japan since 2006.
