Born in 1959. Axel Lehmann completed his studies in business administration and economics at the University of St. Gallen in 1984. In 1989, he received his Doctorate and was awarded the Peter Werhahn Prize for the best thesis in the area of management science and academic theory. After research studies at Harvard Business School and the Arizona State University, he received his postdoctoral qualification in 1996 and was subsequently appointed se-nior lecturer and assistant professor at the University of St. Gallen. In addition, Axel Lehmann is a graduate of the Wharton School Advanced Management Programme.
Axel Lehmann first pursued an academic career working as a project manager and research associate at the Institute for Insurance Economics at the University of St. Gallen as from 1985. Four years later, he was appointed lecturer in business administration and, in 1990, Vice President and Head of Consulting and Management Development at the Institute for Insurance Economics as well as the European Center of the University of St. Gallen. After having worked as a visiting professor at Bocconi University in Milan, Axel Lehmann was named Head of Corporate Planning and Corporate Controlling at Swiss Life (Zurich) in 1995. One year later, he joined Zurich Financial Services as a member of the Executive Management Team of Zurich Switzerland. Subsequently, he held several executive management and corporate development positions within the company. After becoming a member of the Group Management Board in 2000, Axel Lehmann was promoted to a member of the Group Executive Committee and Chief Executive Officer of the Continental Europe Business Division in 2002. Two years later, Axel Lehmann was named Chief Executive Officer. Within this position, he was responsible for the creation of the Europe General Insurance Business Division. Subsequently, he assumed the position of Chief Executive Officer Zurich North America Commercial. In 2008, he became Group Chief Risk & Technology Officer and is, in addition, responsible for Group Information Technology.
Axel Lehmann is an honorary professor for business administration and service management and Chairman of the Board of the Institute of Insurance Economics at the University of St. Gallen.
