Curriculum Vitae


Born in 1942. Michel Pébereau was educated at l’Ecole Polytechnique and l’Ecole Nationale d’Administration (ENA), where he completed his studies in 1967.

Upon graduating from ENA, Michel Pébereau started his career as an Inspecteur des Finances. Between 1970 and 1982, he held several positions at the Ministry of Finance and Economy including Special Advisor, Deputy Administrator, Chief of Staff and Senior Assistant. In 1982, he was named Managing Director of Crédit Commercial de France, and from 1987 to 1993, Michel Pébereau acted as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. Subsequently, he became Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Banque Nationale de Paris (BNP) until 2000. In addition, he served as Chairman of Paribas between 1999 and 2000. After the merger that led to BNP Paribas, he was appointed Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of BNP Paribas in 2000. Since 2003, he has served BNP Paribas as Chairman.


Michel Pébereau is Chairman of the European Banking Federation, the Board of Investment Banking and Capital Markets of the French Banking Federation, the Board of Institut de l’Entreprise, the Supervisory Board of the French Aspen Institute, of the Institut Internationale d’Etudes Bancaires (IIEB) and of the Management Board of the Institute of Political Sciences. From 2002 to 2003, he acted as Chairman of the French Banking Federation and held the position of Chairman of the French Banking Association from 2002 to 2004. Additionally, Michel Pébereau is a member of the Conseil Exécutif du MEDEF (Mouvement des Entreprises de France) and member of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York’s International Capital Markets Advisory Committee. Moreover, he served as Professor at the Institute of Political Studies in Paris from 1980 to 2000.

Michel Pébereau has been decorated Commander of the Legion of Honour, Commander of the National Order of Merit and Inspecteur Général des Finances honoraire. He has published several books, among them La Politique Economique de la France (3 vol.), International monetary, financial and economic relations and C’est possible … Voici comment.
