Curriculum Vitae


Born in 1951. Gerhard Schwarz studied economics, business administration and law at the University of St. Gallen, the American Institute for Economic Research in Great Barrington (United States) and Colombia (South America). In 1980, he received his Doctorate in Economics. In 1996, Gerhard Schwarz attended the Advanced Management Programme at Harvard Business School.


After having worked for one year in the industrial sector, Gerhard Schwarz began his career as a journalist at the leading Swiss newspaper Neue Zürcher Zeitung in 1981. From 1983 to 1986, he was Economic Correspondent in Paris. Since 1994, Gerhard Schwarz heads the economic, financial and business section of the Neue Zürcher Zeitung, where he writes extensively on philosophical and ethical foundations of economics, the business cycle, the world economy, comparative economic systems and economic policy.


Since 1989, Gerhard Schwarz has also been lecturer at the University of Zurich on comparative economic systems. Moreover, he is Chairman of the Friedrich A. von Hayek-Gesellschaft in Germany, Vice Chairman of Progress Foundation in Zurich and member of the board of various foundations such as the St. Gallen Foundation for International Studies, Liberales Institut and the Schweizer Monatshefte. He is an active member of the Mont Pèlerin Society.


Besides his editorial writing for the Neue Zürcher Zeitung, Gerhard Schwarz has also published and edited various books as well as longer articles in scholarly journals, among them Lust und Last des Liberalismus or Die Soziale Kälte des Liberalismus. In 1996, Gerhard Schwarz was awarded the Ludwig-Erhard-Preis, the most prestigious prize for economic journalism in Germany.
