Asia’s Economic Integration and Its Impact on Future Growth

Asia’s immense dynamism over the past 20 years, especially the rise of China, has been accompanied by an increasing economic integration of the region. The fundamental cultural, historical and political differences among East Asian countries make convergence all the more remarkable. However, important questions remain as to how regional co-operation will shape the economic outlook in the years to come. That is to say, the pace of further integration will have a considerable influence both on future growth within Asia and on Asia’s status as an increasingly important growth engine for the world economy. With a focus on China and Japan as two major players in the Asian economy, the session addresses these issues by taking a close look at the impact of economic policy as well as at the role of the private sector in fostering processes of economic integration.
